The first National Park of India (protected area II of the category of IUCN) was the National Park of Hailey, now National Park of Jim Corbett, established in 1935. Before 1970, India had only 5 national parks; in May of the 2004 they got to be 92. At the moment, 38,000 kilometers of the territorial area are occupied by the national parks, approximately the 1.2% of the total surface of India. A total of 166 national parks is authorized, and the plans in course are to finish programming the rest, like the National Park of Kambalakonda (70 km ²) in Andhra Pradesh and the Anamudi Shola (7.50 km ²) and Pampadum Shola (1.32 km ²) in Kerala. Of special importance they are the 28 reserves of tiger that would have to serve to protect the survival of this national animal of India.
