La literatura italiana es toda aquella literatura que se haya escrito en el idioma italiano. La configuración política de Italia y su unificación como estado único fue en el siglo XIX, momento en el cual se adopta el dialecto toscano como lengua oficial con la denominación de idioma italiano; esta decisión fue tomada fundamentalmente debido a la larga tradición literaria y a las grandes figuras de la literatura que habían utilizado dicha lengua previamente. Por ello, se consideran como autores en italiano a todos aquellos que hayan utilizado dicha lengua, independientemente de que en su época Italia existiera ya como estado único independiente con idioma oficial propio.
