New Zealand consists of 16 regions, 7 in the South Island and 9 in the North
Island, that as well, subdivides in 95 districts and 4 maoríes districts. New
Zealand also has a number of separated islands, that are not included in the
regional limits. The Chatham Islands are not a region, although its council
operates like a region under the Resource Management Act. The subAntarctic
Kermadec Islands and Islands are inhabited only by a small number of members of
the Department of Conservation of New Zealand. New Zealand also maintains
responsibility for the outer subjects of the independent countries of the
Islands Cook and Niue and administers the dependency of Tokelau. In the
Antarctic New Zealand it maintains (although congealed by the Antarctic Treaty)
the claim on the Dependency of Ross including the Scott Island, and the Balleny
