The Polish culture has been influenced so much by the Eastern culture as western. At the moment, this is demonstrated in its architecture, folklore and art. Poland is the birthplace of several met personages, like Marie Curie, Frédéric Chopin, and Nicholas Copérnico, among others. The Polish art has reflected the world-wide tendencies. Famous painter Jan Matejko included numerous significant historical events in his paintings. Another important Polish artist was Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. It was an example of the Renaissance man, as well as an outstanding dramatist, painter and poet Stanisław Wyspiański. The beginnings of Polish Literature date from years 1100, and includes poets and writers like Jan Kochanowski, Adam Mickiewicz, Bolesław Prus, Juliusz Słowacki, Witold Gombrowicz, Stanisław Lem, Ryszard Kapuściński, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Władysław Reymont, Czesław Miłosz, Wisława Szymborska (the four last ones being winning of the Nobel prize de Literatura), and the English novelist of Polish origin Joseph Conrad. Many Polish directors of cinema world-wide are met, including the winners of the Oscar Roman Polański, Andrzej Wajda, Zbigniew Rybczyński, Janusz Kamiński and Krzysztof Kieślowski. Also world-wide the actresses Helena Modjeska and Pola Negri are met. Between the composers, she is known world-wide Frédéric Chopin, as well as Krzysztof Penderecki, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, and Karol Szymanowski, among others. Famous plates of the Polish kitchen are kiełbasa, barszcz, pierogi, flaczki (gut soup), gołąbki, oscypek, kotlet schabowy (Polish cutlets of pig), bigos, several potato plates, sanwich of zapiekanka, among others.
