The History of
Portugal is the own one of an
European nation whose
origins go back to the Low Average Age, extending their territories
during the Era of the Discoveries until creating a vast empire and
becoming a world-wide power between centuries XV and XVI.
Portugal
entered decay losing great part of its wealth and estatus, which
began by the loss of its troops and naval in the disaster of Green
barley. It returned to be ruined in 1755 with the almost total
destruction of his capital by an earthquake, at the beginning of
century XIX with the Napoleonic Wars and in 1822 with the
independence of his greater colony,
Brazil. A revolution in 1910
demoted the monarchy, but the Republic was incapable to resolve the
problems of an immersed country in the social confliction, the
corruption and the confrontations with the Church. In 1926 a coup d'etat took step to a dictatorship that stayed in the power until
1974, when a revolution of the left military imposed the democracy.
The following year, Portugal declared the independence of all
possessions in Africa. He is founding partner of NATO, OECD and the
EFTA. In 1986 it joined the EEC (present
European Union).
