The
Valencia (Spain,

has been inhabited since ancient times by Phoenicians,

Tabarca Island is the only inhabited island in Valencia, Spain and there were 73 inhabitants in 2009. It is located some 4.9 miles off Santa Pola, and 10 miles from the port of Alicante, Spain. It is an island with an approximate length of 1,800 meters and a maximum width of 400 meters. Its maximum height is 15 meters, hence also called "Illa Plana" or "Flat Island". Along with the islands of La Cantera, La Galera and La Nao is a small archipelago. Its shores were a haven for pirates Barbary, until in the eighteenth century, Charles III ordered it fortify and raise a village where the house several families of Genoa fishermen were released from captivity in the Tunisian city of "Tabarka" (Tabarqah). Hence the island was given the name "New Tabarca".
