The
United Kingdom is formed by four constituent
countries - England, Scotland, Wales and
Ireland of the North that have
different systems from subdivisions whose origin goes back previous to the
formation of the United Kingdom. Recently, the responsibility of the local
government is decentralized for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but it
does not stop England since it does not count on a decentralized parliament as
they have the other constituent countries. In England, the legislation
corresponding to the territorial organization it is to have of the Parliament
and the Government of the United Kingdom, since England does not count on a
decentralized parliament. From 1994 England it is divided in first level in 9
regions. The region of the Great London solely has a chosen assembly and a mayor
directly - from year 2000-, after the popular approval of a referendum in 1998
that created the Authority of the Great London. One seted out that the remaining
regions also had a chosen regional assembly, but after the refusal to the
creation of these in the north of England in a referendum in 2004 this option
retired. Under the regional level, the Great London is divided in 32
municipalities (boroughs) plus the City of London, and the rest of England is
divided in metropolitan and nonmetropolitan counties - that are divided as well
in districts, or unitary authorities. Northern
Ireland, from 1973, is divided
administratively in 26 districts, each with an advice chosen by transferable
personal vote and with limited powers to pick up wastes, control of dogs and the
maintenance of parks and cemeteries. Nevertheless, the 13 of March of 2008, the
Executive of Northern
Ireland accepted the proposals to create 11 new advice to

include counties, duchies, burghs (independent cities represented in the
Parliament of Scotland) and parishes. In 1975 he began operating a division
in regions and districts, however, was abolished in 1996. Since then, for
administrative purposes Scotland is divided into 32 council areas or
"council", run by a unitary authority responsible for all local services.
The Community councils (community councils), meanwhile, are informal
organizations representing certain subdivisions within the district.
There are other distinct subdivisions of Scotland for different purposes.
Thus, systems of fire and police are still based on the division into
regions introduced in 1975. For the health system for the postal districts
as well as other governmental and nongovernmental organizations, various
geographical subdivisions remain long tradition.
The status of "city" in Britain is determined by a royal patent. There are
six cities in Scotland: Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and more
