The statue of Redeeming Christ is located to 709 meters
on the level of the sea, and it is located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, in
the top of the hill of the Bent one. It has an overall height of 38 meters,
including its 8 meters of pedestal. It was inaugurated the 12 of October of
1931, after approximately five years of works. According to the book of
Guinness Record, the Redeeming Christ is the greater representation of Jesus
Christ realised by the man in the world.
The construction
of a religious monument in River was suggested for the first time in 1859,
by Pedro father Maria Boss and Princess Isabel. The idea in 1921 was
retaken, when the commemoration by the centenary of Independence came near.
The first stone of the statue was placed the 4 of April of 1922 and the
works were initiated in 1926. Among others people who collaborated for the
accomplishment can be mentioned Heitor engineers gives Whistles Coast
(author of the project), the plastic artist Carlos Oswald (author of the
final design of the monument) and the French sculptor Paul Landowski
(executor of the head and the hands of the sculpture). The construction of
reinforced concrete, of more than 1,000 tons, combines engineering,
architecture and sculpture, and has between its profits the fact that nobody
died in accident during works, something that was not normal at the time and
with projects of that dimension. By the conditions of construction, on a
base in which almost the scaffold did not fit, with strong winds, and the
structure of the statue, whose arms they extend towards the emptiness and
the head is inclined in a challenge to engineering, Levy described the work
as " hercúlea". In the inauguration ceremony it was predicted that the
illumination of the monument was driven from the Italian city of Naples,
where the Italian scientist Guillermo Marconi would emit an electrical
signal that he would be relayed by an antenna located in from Rio de Janeiro
district of Jacarepaguá, via a located receiving station in Dorchester,
England. Nevertheless, bad weather disabled the feat and the illumination
finally was driven directly from the premises. The illumination system was
replaced twice: in 1932 and 2000. Recovered in 1980, on the occasion of the
visit of the Pope Juan Pablo II, and again in 1990. In 2003 a system of
mechanical stairs was inaugurated to facilitate the access to the platform
where the statue rises. Known like symbol not only the city of Rio de
Janeiro, but also of Brazil, the statue of Redeeming Christ is caught by the
lenses of two million tourists who contemplate and trasforman this tourist
point in a true “tower of Babel”
